Detecting social networks via email.
Social network analysis has become prominent in the wake of 9/11, and tracking potential terrorists is certainly one of the areas of great interest that is spurring further research, but the same tool can be used to find potential cooperators, to discover who in an organization or community is the real person to go to despite what the org charts say, to nurture online communities among people who may not be aware of their affinities. New Scientist reports on intriguing work out of Hewlett-Packard’s research lab. Joshua Tyler, Dennis Wilkinson, and Bernardo Huberman have discovered a method for detecting social networks by looking at patterns of email traffic. [Smart Mobs]
