thomas n. burg - on social media and its benefits for us, and sometimes gossip.

Something strange happened today. I received an email to my Gmail ( )-address that was not intended to be sent to me.

What Google ( ) did was it equated firstname.lastname@gmail.com with firstnamelastname@gmail.com. Whereas the latter is someone completley different.

Let’s hope they fix that.

[Update:] Google did respond to my complaint; the said that Google doesn’t make any difference whether you use a “.” for your ID. Which means firstname.lastname = firstnamelastname. The strange thing is, however, that there are now 2 people using the same email-address. There is something wrong with this.

My conclusion: do not use free email if you expect professional service!

[Update 2:]It seems as if Google’s Gmail ( ) - ID-generating process causes puzzlement if there are similar email-addresses around. So there is no real security breach but a usability issue. Thus I conclude: still a decent free service with a great and unmatched user interface but the problems that free email brings along.

[Update 3:]

Found this today, a real (corrected) security breach in Gmail ( )
