thomas n. burg – on social media, software tools and its benefits for us, and sometimes gossip.

August 17th, 2005

Well, after having some time invested in setting up a startup firm I’m happy to announce that we are in line. In line with going to the market. Our firm is called permalink and our product is called Nextspace.

We will offer services and an application that will drastically change the way organizations and corporations understand their way of internal communications, additionally educational institutions are part of our quest. Planting that seed into the minds of general managers and fulfilling that what goes along with that promise is our mission.

When I decided to not continue my job at the Danube University Krems I was certain that I’ll do something in the field of social software. It all started a year ago or so: First ideas came to my mind, they took shape, got to know some people that were interested in my visions, and the U wasn’t able to offer anything of interest – taking my life into my hands and started building my own ship.

So now we are here with an application that was first developed together with Christian Langreiter and Stefan Rinner – a fantastic suite of social software metaphors – weblog, wiki, tagging, bookmarking, calendering, rss- aggregator … – all integrated into one piece of experience. The application – then called Carrier – is based on HOP and was developed under a BSD-license. It was developed for the project technologyLog.at.

Along with establishing that firm we forked that app, added some new features, changed some of the concepts, made it an enterprise application. It’s called Nextspace and will be available in two flavors: as an ASP-model and as a stand-alone server. Licensing will be determined very soon. I’m pretty sure that we will have an open source software license available.

It’ll take some time before we will have a public testbed available. News on that are available on

If you need any additional information, want to participate in devloping and deploying our vision or else please get in contact with me.

Job-Opening:
And after all we are looking for additional developers that need to know their way around in Java (http://helma.org) and server side Javascript – so, if you know wizards that are interested in working for a startup please let them know.
