There is election campaigning in Vienna. In a little more than 4 weeks the City council of Vienna is elected. Vienna is reigned by the Socialdemocrats and the only question is if they will the get out of the electorate with an absolute majority - this happened the last time in 1987 (see the history [pdf])
Today I was asked to review the websites of the major candidates for the local TV-channel.
Well, to make the long story short. I stopped by at those sites:
and found the following:
All of the 4 candidates conceive of the web as a broadcasting medium. They voice their programs, goals aso. They use different CMSs and design to provide rather simple sites that offer almost no reason to visit them except you are interested in the statements you hear and read everywhere else.
Only the site of Michael Häupl tries to understand the web as a stream of conversations, events, and people. It offers some innovation in terms of
- Podcasts. (What are podcasts?)
- Mobilizing (60 seconds). (That means leveraging the power of smart mobs)
- Micro-donations. (What are micro-donations?)
Besides this site offers by far the most informational material.
No site whatsoever offers any means and places for interested folks to interact virtually.
Conclusion:
Since - for the first time - the voting age was decreased to 16 I wonder why they didn’t try to appeal to the young electorate. The do not use the web as a tool to tap into the conversations of fellow voters. Maybe they are right to ignore this part of public relations - I doubt that.
There are some exceptions at the Green’s house, at the Red’s house, and at the Black’s house - on the back seats of course.
Christoph Chorherr, a Green politician and business man, enters the campaign as number 8 at the Green’s. If he gains 12.000 direct votes he can somehow overjump his fellows. He started a weblog to get into conversation. The same is true for others like Sabine Gretner, and Marie Ringler - both are on the Green list.
Jürgen Wutzelhofer has a weblog. Ulli Sima announces a weblog and Sonja Wehsely, Siegi Lindenmayr, Sandra Frauenberger, Christian Oxonitsch, Sonja Ramskogler, Thomas Reindl, Laura Rudas, Andreas Schieder, Heinz Vettermann have personal homepages that offer the theoretical potential for interaction with the web and the people out there - all from the Socialdemocrats.
Gabriele Tamandl and Ferry Maier, Walter Strobl, Alexander Neuhuber, Andreas Salcher represent the Black’s interactive forces.
