thomas n. burg - on social media and its benefits for us, and sometimes gossip.

September 12th, 2006

Again I was approached by a journalist - this time from a Spanish economic magazine - and again I’ll publish Q&A. Let’s see how long this will last.

1) First of all, could you tell me what it is exactly BlogTalk and how many editions there had been?

BlogTalk was and still is the only conference that deals with Weblogs and Social Software from a community, research, and business perspective. It’s the only truly international conference and it’s the 3rd edition. The first one was 2003.

2) What do you think about the “explosion” of blogs around almost the entire world and why do you think it is happening?

It happens because it can be done by almost anyone. That means since the means of production (=the software) are cheap and available the people are using it. Second it supports our desire to connect and to converse. We are humans and like to talk, after all. This is also true for business and learning issues.

3) Do you have any numeric data about numbers of blogs nowadays?

Please consult http://technorati.com the estimate about 60 million blogs

4) How would you define a blog?

A blog is a personal publishing tool the connects the editor to other like-minded people on a regular basis.

5) Could you say something about the future of the blogs?

Well they will stay with us and become part of our digital communications portfolio.

6) Are blogs fulfilling any social function?

Definitely since they connect people on a global yet individual basis.
