thomas n. burg - on social media and its benefits for us, and sometimes gossip.

April 21st, 2006

Had a talk with a former sales representative of a DMS ( ) (=document management systems) implementing firm. While getting to know each other - he might be our sales voice - we reached a point at which I burst out: “No it’s not about de-contextualizing and separating knowledge artifacts from the authors/creators”. A point that is completely clear if you are in the social software ( ) business. The majority, however, dream the age-old dream of formalizing the value that people create. Eventually - one might think - this idea wants to get rid of human contamination all together: pure knowledge without anything that refers to its human creator. Once it’s pure we are going to manage it - once we manage it we gained the power to exploit it.

I’m entirely sure that this is the wrong way while admitting that there is of course codified knowledge around and here to stay. But: the majority of our available time we spent with dirty experiences and knowledge ( ). No white shirts, collars or whatsoever. To dig through that contamination and create value even before that is adding value. Providing software and concepts that support this step is it - but you know that, for sure.
