thomas n. burg - on social media and its benefits for us, and sometimes gossip.

It’s one of those buzzwords that’s evoking people’s Vorstellungskraft (imagination). I think that stems from the two words that make the expression: interaction ( ), refers to communication ( ) - be it the message or the shape of the message - but for me as the notion for something that’s magically rooted in automation ( ), robotics ( ), technology ( ) after all. Then there is design, one of those words that evoke the notion of arts, Gestalten, shaping things, giving things a shape, planning and creating after all - thus notions of activity and beauty are evoked. So bringing those two formerly separated worlds - technology and arts ( ) - together creates a somehow empty space into that we project our visions and fears of both technology and arts unless/until we have an explanation for it (compare the monster and innovation discourse).

Well, Dan Saffer is giving as a proper and digestible definition in this presentation at Adaptive Paths User Experience Week provided by IT Conversations.

According to Dan Saffer interaction design ( ) refers to three basic levels:.
- technology: making technology easy and fun to use.
- design: designing for behaviors, what happens if I push this buttons?.
- sociability: connecting people to other people through objects (products and services)

.

He eventually puts interaction design below the domain of user experience design close to information architecture and next to interface design, hci, usability-egineering, industrial design, graphic design. Listen to this podcast then after 18 minutes he turn to the historical roots of his concept of interaction design.
