Recently I stumbled upon this article on “The Real Viral Effect” (PDF). The “real” refers to the long tail meaning that sustainable effects from viral campaigns come over long time and not the initial burst. They show off a nice chart – please click the link above.
That reminded me, however, of a pattern I observed at Playyoo as well. We recently did a campaign with the following result.

The curve perfectly fits their comments. Now you just have to take care to repeat that pattern often enough. And – most important – your service/product needs to hit the right nerve and needs to deliver.
