Good article. But isn’t that what IBM is actually doing: from hardware to software and eventually to consulting. If so they know in the end the clients will buy their hard/software. So one might wonder if this all about securing the software business.

Thus I’m not sure if the cited LEF report points into the more realistic direction (of the future role of IT) of having IT departments support their inhouse clients and guide them through the jungle of available applications and services. As long as the default [tag-tec]enterprise[/tag-tec] exists IT will control the tools available. And as long as they do that they will stay the most conservative departments of an enterprise, Having said that I think that (inhouse IT) consulting will ultimately turn into controlling and restricting. It’s simply that I don’t think that IT departments ever changed an enterprise from an organizational and cultural standpoint. Although the latter is necessary as lot of people agree. So – again – those who are in charge (the executives and sometimes the employees) need to understand and see the benefits of everything [tag-tec]Web2.0[/tag-tec] and beyond.

Finally I’d say the future of [tag-ice]Web2.0[/tag-ice] depends on the diffusion of [tag-tec]innovation[/tag-tec] principles and service providers and vendors being able to cross the chasm.

Even though he is cautious enough not to claim that TA will demand money from content providers his tone somehow points into that direction. Martin Bredl, speaker of the TA, adds – more neutral in tone – the official standpoint in a comment.

rudifischer: Was kostet “gratis”?

Following this wise statement.

For Success in the Enterprise, Think Platform:”Software architecture is an unintended consequence of social architecture,” Smith says. “If you have a dysfunctional organization, and you build software to align with it, you’re going to get dysfunctional software. We need to go in with our eyes open and understand. This may exacerbate issues. Don’t expect putting new technology is going to change that. it often exacerbates issues.”

Joe McKendrick is referring to David M. Smith from Gartner and discusses briefly the difference of [tag-ice]SOA[/tag] and Web 2.0 in terms of customer acceptance. The latter requires less changes in the business processes and therefore is more easily deployable.

That might be true but think of Smith’s notion of the paradigm shift that’s underway and not easily digested, accepted and utilized. This paradigm shift is about a move from monolithic platforms that reside in the bunkers of corporations to the web as a platform.
This is an important issue especially relevant for SMEs, I think. If you conceive of the web as platform that hosts your business tools than you have to grasp the idea of a virtual and distributed platform. You don’t put it somewhere although you can host parts of the internet on your premises – as long as those servers are connected to the rest of the network you can harness its benefits. The success factor of a platform is its ability to accommodate an ecosystem.
That means think precisely how your platform (this small part of the internet) supports exchange and conversation based on open standards.

At e-week you’ll find an enlightening article on the benefits of using RSS instead of email for efficient communication especially within a business context.

RSS Offers Relief from Enterprise E-Mail Overload: ‘Even though it’s a consumer-driven technology, it may have more benefit for a company than for an individual user. It helps streamline existing forms of communication, so a company will see benefit right away,’ said Oliver Young, an analyst at Forrester Research. ‘It can mean more efficient use of e-mail. It’s geared toward timeliness and what needs more, or less, attention. [tag-ice]RSS[/tag-ice] can really drive benefit that way.’

A long-time favorite topic of mine is [tag-ice]visibility[/tag-ice] as a central means of efficient communication and knowledge sharing. While email accelerates the distribution of information it – by the same token – not only fills your inbox rapidly it also obfuscates itself. Items in your inbox do not provide context and/or a place to make sense of information.

Having that said I think it’s necessary to state that e-mail will be with us for a long time. And that it still is an excellent business tool – but and that’s for sure we are heading into a different paradigm. A paradigm that makes usage of different web-based communications tools like: [tag-tec wiki]wikis[/tag-tec], [tag-tec weblog]weblogs[/tag-tec], aso.

RSS itself could run into the same risks if it is just another IMAP-folder in your e-mail software – although by using [tag-tec]RSS[/tag-tec] you can get rid of spam. The very value of RSS is recognizable if you use this webservice as a tool to make data and information visible – be it on your [tag-ice]intranet[/tag-ice] or on your website. The moment data starts wandering and doing that visibly we will have a place to gather and communicate.

You will see some cross-posting the next time as I try to figure out how to manage this and the factline blog.

Companies that offer business email hosting make it much easier for small or mid size business’s to exchange email. In-house hosting is out. To have Outlook exchange for a small monthly fee takes away the expense and frustration of in-house exchange. A Microsoft exchange server is the solution to business email hosting and web hosting.

It’s now pretty clear where to start. Never, ever try to use technology to transform a (corporate) culture this might be called “embracing the monster” (comp. Monstermedia).

Intranet as a mirror to the organisation: “Every organisation has a unique mix of culture, business processes, history, technology and strategic directions (to name but a few factors). When it comes to intranets, it can then be said that they hold up a mirror to the organisation. To put it another way: the most successful intranets are those that directly reflect the unique nature of the organisations they serve.

One of the most immediate consequences of this is that we need to abandon the naive idea of the ‘best’ intranet. There can be no absolute measure of intranet quality and effectiveness, and the success of the intranet is only meaningfully measured within the local environment.”
