Lifestories, gemeinhin als Lebensgeschichte(n) übersetzt, stellen einen weiteren Schritt in der Evolution des Internet dar. Vor 10 Jahren hat
man mit Personal (Web)Publishing all die Techniken und Tools zusammengefaßt, die es – technisch avancierten – Individualistinnen
ermöglichten erstmals kostengünstig einer – potentiell – breiten Öffentlichkeit gegenüber publizistisch aufzutreten. Mit dem Momentum der Social Media Bewegung wird das Web nun als ein Ort der gemeinschaftlichen Lifestories erkannt.

Parallel dazu entwickelt sich eine Reihe von Anwendungen, deren Nutzen darin besteht, die Komplexität verfügbarer (Multimedia) Publishing Plattformen zu vereinfachen und an einer Stelle zu bündeln. „Crossing the Chasm” könnte man diese Entwicklung – um mit Geoffrey Moore zu sprechen – nennen. Zielgruppe sind nicht mehr die Early Adopters, die täglich neue Accounts bei neuen Publishing-Services anlegen, sondern eine breite Zielgruppe an Menschen, die ihre Lebensgeschichte bzw. Elemente davon im digitalen (web-basierten) Appliktionen erzählen/publizieren. Zielgruppe dieses Personal Publishing ist in erster Linie die Familie; es geht bei diesen Publishing-Prozessen um die Verknüpfung verschiedener Medienformate sowie die nachhaltige Datenspeicherung und Authentifizierung.

Zwischen Identität und Netzwerk-Effekten versuchen eine Reihe von Publishing Anwendungen sog. Normalverbraucher zum publishen/erzählen anzuregen. Im Spannungsfeld der eigenen Erzählung und dem kollektiven Erzählen versuchen diese neuen Publishing Tools neuen Dimensionen des vernetzen Erlebens zu unterstützen. Das Web entwickelt damit eine eigene Formensprache, die allein technisch davor nicht mögllich war.

Kritische Elemente dieser Web-Applikationen sind: Authentifizierung, Langzeitarchivierung, Rechtevergabe sowie die Nutzung bestehender
Publishing-Services bzw. eigene Asset-Verwaltung.

Still no real reliable provider yet – I mean really reliable. What struck was this statement by one of the very successful consumer storage-providers. Box.net‘s Aaron states.
If these were our costs for an average free account, we, or anyone who offered it, would be in business for no more than two months. Uncoupling storage from the application makes it impossible to have a practical business when you are paying for the bandwidth. All in all, this is why neither Amazon nor a web services API developer will be competing with Box.net (or google). (Box.net:”Are we competing with Amazon?“)

Strange, there are a lot of competitors that rely completely on Amazon S3, for instance Digitalbucket. If box.net gets it that there must be a lot of magic behind the Digitalbuckets, Elephantdrives and alike. On the other hand we did some internal calculations and S3′s [tag-ice]bandwidth[/tag-ice] is indeed very expensive especially if you head towards sharing features. But then there is S3′s usage of bit-torrent. Hmm an, however, interesting space to watch.
